The New and Improved House System: Earning House Points

The+New+and+Improved+House+System%3A+Earning+House+Points

Do you want to show house spirit and prove to other houses that your house is the best? Now that we have a new house point system, you can do that! Each house can gain points from wearing house shirts, winning athletic competitions, and participating in events. Points will be added throughout the year and at the end, the winning house will be announced. First place will get a mystery surprise, so get ready to win!
The house system was established a couple of years ago by previous students as an opportunity for community-building and student leadership. It was created to strengthen friendships and increase teamwork and inclusion. Starting in fifth grade, students are sorted into the four houses: Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. Each house has a head and assistant head from high school, as well as prefects throughout high school and middle school.
As new house leadership, we plan to hold many exciting events this school year. At the end of last school year, we hosted a pep rally and a water balloon fight. With music, dancing, and everyone hyped up, the events were a huge success, for both students and teachers! This year we started the point system off strong by having a ‘Tug-of-War’ event on the 5th Friday of this school year. While coming up with the idea for this event, we put great effort into making a fun and competitive environment around these battles between houses, and it was the most energetic house event we have had yet.
As hundreds of students and faculty in grades five through twelve entered the field, the excitement around this event grew. People started to congregate into their houses in the four corners of the field and chants began. With energetic music being blasted in everyone’s ears, the games began.
This ‘Tug-of-War’ event was organized through simple brackets for high school and middle school, respectively. We started off with the middle school events, and after a grueling war, Air House reigned victorious. Then, just as the middle schoolers finished their celebrations, the high school division began their competition. Just like the middle school bracket, Fire played against Water and Air played against Earth. The final was set to be Air and Fire. The volume and the anticipation gradually rose until the duel began. With Air and Water pushing and pulling back and forth for what felt like minutes, Air finally took their second win of the day. After the student matches, a teacher game was played, which ended with a combined winner of Fire and Water.
Points for this event were distributed among houses. First place earned 500 points, second earned 300 points, third earned 200 points, and last earned 100 points. In this event, Air house received 1000 points, Fire house received 800 points, Water received 700 points, and Earth received 300 points. Along with these points for places, we also gave two points to a house for every person in that house who was wearing their house T-shirt during the event.
Overall, the first ‘House Point System’ event was a success and kicked off this new era of school spirit. This new system will create a pride that the BIM house system has never seen before. Now all that’s left to say is, may the best house win!
