Fasting and Prayer Room During Ramadan: 227

Fasting+and+Prayer+Room+During+Ramadan%3A+227

Ramadan is the celebration of the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Ramadan is being celebrated from March 10 to April 9 this year. Ms. Fors has opened her office–the counseling room, 227–for Ramadan. It can serve as a calm and contemplative space for prayer and for those who are fasting. 227 will be open for any students practicing Ramadan who need a space to pray or visit during lunch. It is of note that Mecca is located toward the corner behind Ms. Fors’ computer.

Ramadan is a month full of fasting, praying, and religious observation for people who practice Islam. The significance of fasting within Islam is becoming closer to God through discipline. A second aspect of it is mindfulness for the less fortunate. Overall, the month of Ramadan is a time for restraint, embodying Sawm, or “fasting,” one of the five pillars of Islam, a season of gratitude, faith, and donation.
