That Thing

by Michelle McEwen

When it came it struck like lightning. I did not have time to run.

There was naught to do but bolt or hide, while that thing — it had its fun.

It was supposed to be a normal day, at least that’s what they said.

So that’s why it was a great surprise when it ripped off the teacher’s head.

I know not where it came from — now I doubt I ever will.

But from the sounds of munching, it did not eat its fill.

It went for protons first — I think they were the tastiest

In the end, I know but one thing, as lunch they were the hastiest.

And so when I escaped the halls, whatever did I see?

I saw what happened to Promethium and thus turned to flee.

When it came it struck like lightning. I didn’t have time to run.

There was naught I could do to flee or hide, while that thing had its fun.

And so my friend, that’s how I ‘scaped that evil creature’s lair.

But to this day, among the desks, it still lays slumbering there.
