The countdown to the big game is on. The Kansas City Chiefs vs. The Philadelphia Eagles. Across America, the Super Bowl is one of the biggest television events during the year. In fact, last year’s game attracted 123.7 million viewers according to Forbes Magazine. For many people, it’s about watching the season finale of their favorite sport. Others just use it as a chance to hang out with their friends and family on an exciting Sunday evening while catching the funny and iconic commercials. But, most people who watch the Super Bowl don’t know the history behind it. This leads us to the question, what is the Super Bowl?
The inaugural Super Bowl was in January 1967, when the top two teams of the AFL (American Football League) and the NFL (National Football League) played each other in a championship game. After that day, it became a national tradition. The winner of the first game was the Green Bay Packers, who would go on and win a total of four Super Bowls. But, the teams with the most Super Bowl wins are the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots, each with six.The player in the most Super Bowls is Tom Brady, with seven (six with the Patriots, one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
Sunday, February 9th marks the 59th Super Bowl. The two teams, the Chiefs and the Eagles, both have recent experience with handling the Super Bowl pressure.
The last time the Eagles went to the season closer was in 2023, when they played the Chiefs, but lost 38-35. This makes this meeting even more special, as it’s a chance for revenge. This year, they’re going in with arguably their best lineup in a while. They have the number one defense in the league, a dual-threat wide receiver lineup with Devonta Smith and AJ Brown, and one of the most creative quarterbacks in the league right now, Jalen Hurts. Their most notable star and breakout player is their running back: Saquon Barkely. He achieved the 2,000 rushing yard record this season, which only nine players have achieved. He was also named the Offensive Player of the Year. Even with an arsenal of weapons, they still might have a hard time beating their opponents, the Chiefs.
With the number one seed in the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs tied the best record in the entire league (15-2, same as the Detroit Lions). They have arguably the best quarterback in the league right now, with Patrick Mahomes. They have a defensive weapon with Chris Jones, and a Pro Bowl tight end legend, Travis Kelce. Yes, he’s also known among Swifties as Taylor Swift’s boyfriend. The Chiefs are trying to do something historic this year. Last season, they won the Super Bowl, which helped them achieve a back to back championship run, which hasn’t happened since the 2002-2003 season, when Tom Brady led the Patriots. Now, the Chiefs are trying to complete a three-peat, which has never happened in the history of the NFL.
No matter the odds or over-under, this is bound to be one of, if not the, best game of the season. The hype around this game is worth it and, if you have the chance, is a must watch event.
